On a rainy California night, a crowd gathered for a sold out Children of Bodom concert outside the House of Blues on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. As soon I approached the venue I could hear people chatting about the show in excitement about seeing their favorite band perform.  A lot of the concert goers were a bit skeptical of the lineup for the show but the fans seemed to really enjoy it as the night progressed.

Staring off the show and hailing from the Faroe Islands, folk metal band TÝR hit the stage with their popular and crowd favorite song “Hold the Heathen Hammer High”. The group of four has developed a huge fan following the US in the recent years and a lot of people at the show were very anxious to see them play. Their last release, Valkyrja, is very successful and has been the buzz in the Metal Community. I have seen TÝR perform numerous times and every time they bring it. The only disappointment that fellow fans and I felt from them was that their set was too short. Everyone is used to hearing a few more songs of their classic material from their previous albums.  Regardless of the short set, the fans sang along with TÝR with their fists in the air.

California’s own Trash Metal band Death Angel hit the stage next. Recently wrapping up a headlining tour for their most-recent album, The Dream Calls for Blood, the road warriors came back for round two. They have a very strong fan following in their home state so as soon as I saw them on the bill; I knew that this show will be insane. As soon as Death Angel hit the stage with full force energy, the crowd reacted. Singer Mark Osegueda does an amazing job utilizing the big stage and interacting with the audience which paid off with the mosh pits opening up and swirling like a tornado. If you never seen these trash veterans in action, make sure you go check them out!

It was finally time for the most anticipated band of the evening, Children of Bodom. Just a few minutes before the band got on stage, everyone was cheering “Bodom! Bodom!” and when they came on, every single person in the room went nuts. Recently releasing Halo of Blood in the summer of 2013, the band has been touring nonstop. A few people got a chance to catch them at the last Mayhem Festival but some people missed their performance. Even though I have been listening to them for years, this was my first time seeing them in concert so I along with many other fans was very excited. Just 10 minutes before the band got on stage, everyone was cheering and when they came on, every single person in the room went nuts. Vocalist Alexi Laiho asked for a crazy mosh pit and the crowd responded pits and surfers everywhere. The icing on the cake was that Children of Bodom performed mostly older material which a lot of the fans enjoyed. This was an awesome performance and I am glad I got a chance to experience it with many other fans!
