Ep.402 – Phoenix @ The Hollywood Bowl – Hollywood,CA – 09/18/10

Category: Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Video Concert Reviews
This was the 3rd time we have had the privilege to see Phoenix live. The first time was at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and it was one of the best shows I had attended in 2009 (Ep.278 – Phoenix & Metric @ The Greek). We also caught them earlier this year at the 2010 Coachella Music and Arts Festival and were once again blown away. The anticipation to see them at the Hollywood Bowl was off the scale.
The Bowl was packed and the show was sold out. Opening acts included Grizzly Bear, who we caught at the Troubadour a while back and who are absolutely fantastic (Ep.235 – Grizzly Bear @ The Troubadour), and Girls who I have still yet to see unfortunately
Phoenix started their set off strong with “Lizstomania” and played a set that was solid throughout. There was no doubt these guys rocked the Hollywood Bowl. Not only was the quality of the audio and performance prestigious, but the band also brought there own lighting crew and utilized the Bowl to its full potential. This is often not the case for artist who play the Bowl as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic or KCRW concert series due to budgeting.
They entire set was very dancy and high energy. The crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves to the maximum extreme and had no problem letting loose. For the encore lead singer Thomas Mars walked out into the crowd and preformed “Les Enfants” and “If I Ever Feel Better.” This portion of the concert seemed to be a crowd favorite and added a lot to the night. Thomas then returned to stage to close out the show with one of the bands hit singles “1901.”
As soon as the show ended you could tell the crowd wanted more and was no where close to wanting to leave. But the house lights came over and that was that. Regardless of wanting more, the entire set was a hoot and hollering good time dance party.
Final thoughts: I cant wait to see Phoenix again and hope you get the chance to see them if you haven’t already! -lorn
