Chrystal has a phone chat with Universal Motown newcomer Suai about her recent record deal and how she became interested in music as a career.

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to chat with Universal Motown recording artist, Suai. This multi-talented up-and-coming singer/songwriter from Detroit, who describes her music as “very honest, R&B/Pop/Soul,” is gearing up for a summer release of her debut album, The Perfect Girl.

Suai worked with heavy-hitting producers and writers on this record, including Akon, 4 Non Blondes’ former singer Linda Perry (who has since written mega hits for Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani), Dre & Vidal (credits include Jill Scott, Chris Brown, Ciara, and Usher), and Neff-U (Ashanti).

“I was very ballad heavy back when I first started. I was a teenager singing about boys, so everything was a ballad, but I didn’t want it to be like that. I’m glad that I got to go in with the people who could pull the mid-tempos and up-tempos out of me,” said Suai.

Suai grew up with a love for music, as her mother was a music teacher.

“I was about 3 or 4, and she’d be playing her demos around the house. We had a Fender Rhodes up in the attic, and I’d see her playing on it, and I wanted to play on it. Little girls want to be like mommy,” said Suai.

She attended a performing arts school in Detroit, and studied voice, piano, guitar, cello, and flute. As a teenager she released an independent album. Her song “Forever and A Day” was added to the airwaves of WJLB in Detroit, which led to label offers including one from Universal Motown.

Suai’s “Am I All Alone?” is featured on the “Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement” compilation CD among other artists such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and Sheryl Crow in support of President Obama.

Currently, Suai is on tour with American Boy’s Estelle, and Beyonce’s also gifted younger sister, Solange. After listening to Suai’s tracks on Myspace, and watching a few performance videos on YouTube – this live lineup seems like a great match for Suai. Although she is a newcomer, Suai has the vocal maturity and stage presence of someone who has been in the spotlight for years – think Alicia Keys meets Natasha Bedingfield.

Keep an ear out for Suai’s single “Oh Snap,” coming to radio soon. Also, be sure to check out my phone interview with Suai, where we talk about the songwriting process, her favorite concert, Tweeting with fans, and much more…right here on
