WOW! What a totally bodacious way to start off 2011!
The internationally known and locally renowned “Do-Over,” a weekly Sunday afternoon special guest DJ bonanza, was suddenly brought to a halt at the end of 2010. Apparently, the owner of the previous Do-Over residence (The Tavern) packed up and moved to Costa Rica. Luckily for us, that unfortunate event led to the Do-Over scoring a sweet ass new residence at Jane’s House, a 100 year old house on Hollywood Blvd. that’s been converted into a bar for all of our pleasure! On Saturday Jan. 1st, we were given the “New-Over.”
The Do-Over is brought to you by Chris Haycock, Jamie Strong and Aloe Blacc. Each week they bring chilled reggae + ol skool hip hop and feature a ridiculous array of special guests. New Years day had my personal favorite… DIPLO!
If you have never caught Diplo before, he’s amazing. His sets are always unique and this was probably the most unique set I’ve seen him perform. While everyone else was spinning 100% vinyl on Saturday, Diplo apologized for hooking up his computer. Then he preceeded to drop reggae jams and ol’ skool hip hop classics to a crowd screaming “ooooooh!” at nearly every song he mixed into the set.
The party was scheduled from 2pm-10pm, but Diplo wouldn’t have it. He told the crowd “This is the last song” at least 3 times, but continued to feed the ravenous party-goers. I don’t think we left until 10:45pm. Diplo easily played for 2 hours with some intermittent support from Jack Beats. The last 30 minutes of his set included dubstep bangers from Rusko (“Hold On”), 12th Planet (“Reasons”) and Skrillex (“Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”) which the crowd demanded by chanting “Dubstep! Dubstep! Dubstep!”
Bottom Line: Amazing event with incredible talent!
DO NOT MISS THE DO-OVER IN 2011
