The Hollywood Sign and Peter Gabriel
@ The Hollywood Bowl
One of my dreams came true last night!
Come January 2013 I will have been living in Los Angeles for 10 years. During that time I have attended close to 1000 concerts, of that about 150-180 of them have been at the always amazing Hollywood Bowl. For those of you that have been with me to a show at the Bowl you might already know this, but for those who don’t my favorite thing to do when I arrive at the Bowl regardless of my seat is to head straight to the very top. The reason that I always do this is because of the view. While standing at the top of the Bowl stage right, you are able to see the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood sign, the John Anson Ford Theatre, the Cross and Griffith Observatory. It is spectacular! The only bummer about the view is that as night falls the Hollywood Sign is not visible because it is not lit. In 1999, the sign was rigged to be lit and accompanied by fireworks in celebration of the year 2000. Cars flooded the streets of Beachwood Canyon, trapping residents and making it impossible for emergency vehicles to reach those in need. Those living on the hill totally freaked out and thus the sign is no longer and will most likely never be lit again. Because I moved to LA after 1999, I missed one of my only chances to see the sign in its full night time glory and it has been a dream of mine to be standing at the top of the Bowl as lights shine over it.
However, there have been a few exceptions since New Year’s Eve 2000. In 2005, the Hollywood sign underwent a month long renovation and at times could be seen lit via a helicopter spotlight. I was not lucky enough to catch a glimpse.
I can’t even count how many times I have had conversations with friends atop the Bowl about my dream to see the Hollywood sign lit as I watch the performance. Last night, I went to the Hollywood Bowl to see Peter Gabriel perform his 1986 album So in its entirety. I was with the love of my life, Romina Rosenow and one of my best buddies Marshall Watson. We hiked to the top of the Bowl and found some amazing seats in Section U1. We could see all the landmarks and had a perfect view. I chatted with Marshall about my wish to see the Hollywood Sign lit, and he agreed that it would be incredibly spectacular. Just then, Peter Gabriel began to perform his 1986 hit “Sledgehammer”, and the crowd went wild and began dancing.
I danced and sang along as I looked off into the landscape that was set behind the Bowl, when suddenly I saw a flash of light. The SIGN WAS LIT! At that moment, a helicopter was looking for something or someone in the hills and lit the sign. I grabbed Marshall and Romina’s attention, and we all gasped with excitement. Although the sign was only lit for a matter of seconds, it was beyond amazing. I continued to rock out to “Sledgehammer” and couldn’t believe that something I had dreamed of for so long had just happened. But before the song ended, we were granted another peek. The helicopter returned and lit up the sign even more then before. First its scanned the sign and then pulled away lighting it in its entirety. Although Peter Gabriel packed the front of the Bowl, he hardly sold any tickets in the highest section of the bowl, so few were able to enjoy this spectacular sight.
As the show went on, Peter Gabriel took the show up another couple notches–such as when, at the start of “In Your Eyes” John Cusack appeared on stage with a boom box.
For the encore we were able to score a Terrace level box. Being up close for a few songs was great, but I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for being where I was during “Sledgehammer”. I am sure my friends are going to get sick of hearing me talk about seeing the Hollywood sign lit up, but I really don’t care. I was with two amazing people and it is something I have dreamed of seeing since I moved to this crazy city. All I can really say to end this post is that I’m more than excited about the future and what tomorrow will bring. 2012 isn’t over yet but has no doubt been one of the most progressive and amazing years of my life. Thanks to all that have been involved and have stuck by and supported me. Much love – Lorn
Although I didn’t talk about the show very much in this post, If you were at this concert or have ever seen Peter Gabriel please comment and let us know what you think because this is You Tell Concerts and “When You Tell Concerts It’s Cooler!” – Poppinoff.
